How Many Recessed Lights Do You Actually Need?
This question comes up in almost every lighting conversation.
Someone looks at the ceiling plan and asks, “So… how many lights should we put in here?”
People usually expect a quick formula. Something like one light every four feet or six lights for a room this size. But lighting doesn’t really work that way.
The real answer depends on a few things that don’t always show up on the floor plan.
One of the biggest factors is simply how the light spreads. Some fixtures throw a wide, soft beam that fills a good portion of the room.
Others are more focused. If the beam is narrow and the lights are spaced too far apart, you start to see those bright circles on the floor with darker areas in between. Almost everyone has seen that somewhere.
Spacing is usually what fixes it.
When lights are placed close enough that their beams overlap slightly, the room tends to feel more natural. Not overly bright, not patchy—just evenly lit.
Ceiling height plays into it too. In a typical eight-foot ceiling, light reaches the floor quickly and spreads out. In rooms with taller ceilings, the fixtures are farther away from the surfaces you’re trying to light. That changes the way everything blends together.
Then there’s beam angle. Wider beams generally work well for everyday room lighting. Narrow beams are useful too, but they’re often better for highlighting a wall, artwork, or something you want people to notice.
At the end of the day, recessed lighting isn’t really about the number of fixtures. It’s about how the light overlaps and fills the space.
